Ride with Caution on I-40 in Arkansas Especially While between the 240 and 289 Mile Markers

I-40 is an east-west route located in Arkansas. The road connects Arkansas western neighbor, Oklahoma, with its eastern neighbor, Tennessee. On its somewhat winding path through Arkansas, I-40 travels through the cities of Fort Smith, Conway, Little Rock, and West Memphis. IN total, the highway covers nearly 300 miles across the state of Arkansas. However, the road is also the location of a number of fatal crashes.

The reasons for fatal accidents on the route include the sometimes mountainous terrain and the unpredictable weather conditions. Because of these factors, many of the accidents that occur on the road are between the 240 mile marker and the 289 mile marker. In one example of this phenomenon, a driver was traveling east driving in the highway’s eastbound lanes. During his journey he began to veer and drift into the westbound lanes of the highway. After crossing into the westbound lanes the driver was killed on impact after hitting an embankment. An investigation revealed that the likely cause of the loss of vehicle control was poor weather conditions and visibility.

What Factors Make Motorcycle Accidents More Likely?

While every motorcycle accident producing severe personal injuries is unique, there are certain common factors that make such an occurrence more likely. These factors include:

    • Poor visibility – Fog or poor weather conditions can greatly reduce visibility. As a smaller vehicle, motorcycles already suffer from problems related to conspicuity therefore and further reductions in visibility affect smaller, less noticeable vehicles in particular.
    • Road debris – While loose gravel or debris that has fallen from another vehicle is always a threat to any motorist, motorcyclists are particularly at risk due to stability issues with a two-wheeled vehicle. Even a small piece of debris on the roadway can cause the motorcyclist to lose control of his or her vehicle greatly increasing the odds of a crash or collision.
    • Reckless or unsafe driving.—Motorcyclists who speed, change lane erratically, lane-share, or engage in other dangerous behaviors greatly increase the risk of accident and injury for all motorists. Individuals should always avoid engaging in these behaviors.
    • Use of alcohol or illegal drugs –The use of any amount of alcohol – even before one crosses the legal limit – dulls senses, alters perception, and impairs decision-making. Use of certain prescription and most illicit drugs will also produce disorienting effects that make it impossible to drive safely. Motorists should refrain from partaking in alcohol or using mind-altering drugs before driving.

The above, unfortunately, only represent a narrow selection of some of the more common factors that significantly increase the odds of a serious accident. Motorcyclists on I-40 in Arkansas should always wear a safety helmet and proper safety gear while riding because such gear frequently mitigates injuries and can save your life.
