A simple fact is that accidents happen. However, characterizing injuries as an inevitable part of life conceals the fact that it is often the actions taken by ourselves and others that increase the chances of a serious injury. While we can only blame ourselves when our own mistake leads to a serious, life-altering injury, the same cannot be said when it is another person’s careless or reckless act that upends one’s life. IN situations like these, it would be grossly unfair to make the person injured due to carelessness, recklessness, or negligence pay for the other person’s behavior.
When you have been seriously injured or a loved one has been wrongfully killed, you likely have many questions. You may wonder how something like this could happen? You may also wonder if there is anything you can do to cover the immense medical costs and damages you have suffered.

What Are common types of Accidents and Injuries?
Unfortunately, there are no shortage of ways to suffer a serious accident. Accidents can occur at home, while traveling, shopping, or while engaging in recreational activities like sports or a particular hobby. While each and every accident is unique and produces injuries based on the characteristics and severity of accidents, there are some types of injuries that occur more commonly than others. These injuries include:
- Traumatic brain injuries – TBIs are a particularly troubling injury type because brain injuries can affect all aspects of the body and its systems. Because the brain is the control center of the body a brain injury can result in wide-ranging problems including memory loss, increased aggression and irritability, reduced information processing abilities, and difficulties with abstract concepts and speech.
- Broken bones – Broken bones can happen in a variety of circumstances, but they are commonly caused by automobile accidents and sports injuries. Broken bones can effect any bone in the body ranging from the skull all the way to the femur, tibia, and various bones in the foot. Breaks can range from a simple break, to a compound or complex break where the bone punctures the skin or there are other complications.
- Whiplash injuries – Injuries of this type are extremely common result of car, truck, and bus accidents. Whiplash injuries occur because of the rapid deceleration that occurs during an accident, acting unevenly on the brain, connecting tissues, and supporting structures. This uneven application of force leads to tearing and shearing.
- Burns – Burn injuries are particularly painful even at the lower end of the severity spectrum. A third-degree burn can require extensive medical procedure and years of therapy to make even a partial recovery. Burns can be caused by heat, electricity, and chemicals.
The above describes only a few of the more common types of injuries. In reality, no accident produces the same types or severity of injuries.
What Types of Damages can I Recover?
The damages that one can recover following a severe injury are dependent on the severity of the injuries and the circumstances that gave rise to those injuries. However, generally, the injured person can recover what is known as compensatory damages. This type of damages are intended to compensate a injured individual for the losses suffered. Specific types of compensatory damages include:
- Lost wages
- Lost future earnings
- Medical bills
- Rehabilitation costs
- Property damage
While less common than compensatory damages, punitive damages can also be awarded, but damages of this type are typically reserved for situations where intentional or wanton conduct caused the injuries.
